2019 Rock the Boat Leadership Conference

Rock the Boat is a leadership conference that educates, empowers, and engages Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) students and communities. We encourage students to be politically and civically engaged while having critical conversations about their identity, culture, and overall APIA history. Throughout Colorado history, many APIA leaders have organized leadership conferences and trainings to encourage APIA upward mobility in personal and professional development, but there hasn’t been a sustainable structure that not only allows individuals to grow, flourish, and enact their own projects, but also fortify a political APIA movement that is founded on values of social justice and equity, especially with and for high school students. Young people have and always will be the drivers of change. We understand and recognize how young folks impact pop and political matters, and want to help build tools and guidance to create a continuum of leaders who are passionate about making a positive difference in their communities and staying politically active. This year, our theme is re:representASIAN. With the increased popularity and appearances of APIA folks on screen, we think it’s important to celebrate these wins of media representation, but also ask everyone to further challenge what was and was not represented on screen. While Hollywood is making strides, it’s even more important to Rock the Boat that Hollywood hires and pays actors, writers, directors of color as much as their white counterparts, and that our narratives on screen are being told by us, for us. So, all abroad, let’s Rock the Boat. 2019 Schedule:  8 AM - 8:30 AM - Registration  8:30 AM - 9:00 AM - Welcome Ceremony and Keynote Speaker  9:00 AM - 9:15 AM - Reenergizing group activity #1 9:15 AM - 10:35 AM - Workshop #1 10:40 AM - 12:00 PM - Workshop #2 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM - Lunch with panel 1:00 PM - 1:15 PM - Reenergizing group activity #2 1:15 PM - 2:35 PM - Workshop #3  2:40 PM - 3:00 PM - Closing Ceremony and Remarks 3:00 PM- 4:00 PM - Resource Fair 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Boba Social Stay updated on our Facebook event page here!
